West Midlands Network Flower Show 2010 The West Midlands Network Flower Show (WMNFS) is rapidly becoming a significant yearly event for Projects. Enthusiastic participants include people with learning difficulties, mental health problems or physical disabilities. The Show is to be held on Thursday 30th September 2010.The WMNFS was set up in 2002 by Cultivations, a charity which encourages horticultural activities for the less able and disadvantaged, www.cultivations.co.uk. The Show offers projects, and the individuals within them, the opportunity to showcase their abilities in gardening and related activities. In all, there are 26 categories which can be entered. They include flowers, vegetables, cookery and crafts. Do please contact Cultivations for further information as all exhibitors receive a Certificate of Participation – everyone goes home a winner, so why not enter now!For many, the Show is the culmination of several months work from sowing the seed, planting the crop or choosing the materials, through to harvesting and in some cases cooking the produce. Popular classes include scarecrows, photography, animals made with vegetables, a decorated plant pot, and ‘A fruit pie made from fruit grown at the project’Entrants arrive early morning and for two hours there is an atmosphere of excitement and activity as contestants stage their exhibits and put the finishing touches in place. The entrants come from all over the West Midlands and some have made long journeys with early starts in order to get their exhibits staged in time. All believe it is worth the effort as the sense of achievement is immense. As judging time approaches, the competition area is cleared of all contestants and their supporters, and calm descends as the judges take over. A team of about 15 judges is responsible for judging around 300 entries. Judges work in teams of three, with each team judging about 5 classes. Judges are taken from across the associated sectors and include representatives from horticulture, mental health, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, as well as voluntary and public sector workers. The winner of the previous year’s Best in Show award is invited to join the judges to decide on the current year’s award winner.Whilst judging is being undertaken, there is plenty to interest the contestants and the visiting public at Vale Head Farm (see below) By midday the judging has been completed, and the competition area is opened to all for viewing. Contestants are eager to see who has won the coveted awards, and the public are impressed by the high standard of the exhibits. An early lunch is followed by the awards ceremony. Medals and Certificates are given to 1st 2nd and 3rd place entrants in each category, and remember that ALL exhibitors go home with a certificate. This year’s Show - Thurs 30th Sept - will be held at Vale Head Farm, Compton Road, Kinver, South Staffordshire DY7 5NJ www.rmet.co.uk (Ruskin Mill Educational Trust) The West Midlands Network Flower Show is open to the public, and exhibits can be viewed as soon as judging is completed, around midday.
